Wow! We all know the world is run by a bunch of billionaire tech bros, but I didn’t realise just how dark things really are behind the scenes until I read Careless People. Sarah Wynn-Williams’ memoir about her time at Meta is an eye-opening, jaw-dropping tell-all that reads like a thriller, but is terrifyingly real….
From the opening shark attack scene, I was completely gripped. What follows is an unflinching look at corporate power, surveillance, and the staggering lack of regulation governing the internet. My biggest takeaway? Mark Zuckerberg might be a good coder, but no one person should have this much unchecked power.
Wynn-Williams doesn’t hold back. She exposes how Meta targeted vulnerable kids, prioritised profit over national security, and collaborated with the Chinese government on censorship tools. And that’s just the creepy business stuff. The treatment of employees is a whole other mess.
And amidst all this, Wynn-Williams is navigating motherhood. There is so much to unpack in this book, it would make a brilliant book club read. Also, she’s a Kiwi. And she has just testified before the U.S. Senate. Here’s hoping this powerful memoir sparks the change we need.
