Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh

Sophie Donaldson coming to us all the way from Sydney, Australia! The hottest girl from Gore and an incredibly special friend of mine. We met in Wellington in 2014 our relationship progressed quickly as we soon moved in together, then as all good 24 years do, we made some impulsive decisions based purely on emotion and packed our bags to shift our escapades across the Tasman. A fellow book lover we now share recommendations from opposite sides of the ocean. ⁣

“Eileen” is New York based author Ottessa Moshfeghs first novel, following a series of acclaimed short stories. Set in 1964, the novel is centered around a 24 year old Eileen living in a New England town in the middle of a deathly winter. She loathes her appearance; the town she lives in; the freezing cold house she shares with her alcoholic father and the women she works with. I was absolutely seduced from the first page. Moshfegh explores the darkest and most vulgar parts of being a young female who is dissatisfied with life. This is a grim story, although often funny and thrilling. My favourite read of 2019.
