American Dirt is about a mother fleeing her hometown in Mexico for America with her son as it is no longer safe for them to stay. This book sets the pace right from the first page I was completely hooked straight away as we follow Lydia and her son Luca as they make their way towards the American boarder. I found this book completely eye opening to the immigration crisis happening on the Mexican boarder, highly highly recommend.
My recommendation comes despite the controversy around the publication of this book which has sparked an incredibly important debate around who's stories are getting published. If you do read this book, which you should, I recommend you then watch Oprahs Book Club 2 part series on Apple TV as she interviews Cummins along side a host of Latino authors to shed light on both sides of the debate.
