10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World is structured around the scientific research that even after our heart stops beating, our brain continues to function for up to 10 minutes. In these 10 minutes the main character Leila re calls her life growing up in Turkey and the friends she has made along the way.
This book is so so great, it covers a lot of heavy content but the heart of it is so beautiful. The novel discusses religion, diversity and friendship and all linked together with cleverly inserted dates that span important parts of real life historical events. Something incredibly special that I thoroughly enjoyed was the descriptions of the Turkish food, which are mouth watering.
Shafak herself is also incredibly interesting, having written multiple books she is now currently facing charges in Turkey for her writing, where she can no longer return, now living in London.
